The Grass Looks Greener on This Side
The title of this blog is a variant of “the grass looks greener on the other side.” Ovid the Greek, way back when, was talking about harvests, how one man thought another’s harvest was richer.
Nowadays the expression is commonly used as a metaphor for not appreciating what you have compared to what someone else has.
If you grew up seeking approval, then this blog may apply to you. Our society encourages ambition, achievement, out-doing others. This constant competition is rewarded, or it may seem so. Bodies compete whether it’s for food, sports or other games. But there is a price to pay if this competition extends to spirit.
The times I have experienced competition from someone else, I have felt invalidated. If I found myself competing, it was based on feeling uncertain within myself, doubting my value. And that was and is an unhappy state.
Relief comes from knowing yourself. I am spirit and I am unique. I am here for a purpose. I have a constant source of reassurance and support from God. Everything comes from God. All I have to do is ask and believe I can receive.
And then there is the body with its emotions, bodily senses, and mind which operates by physical laws while spirit operates by spiritual laws. The conversation between spirit and body is a daily constant.
Meditation is my way of talking with God and with my body. It has taken many years to have some understanding of the above statements. I meditate each day to listen and reassure my body that I am here in the present and that I care. I remind myself what my spiritual purpose is. When I rise above the body’s emotions, I can be light and see life as fun and fulfilling.
Meditation is a step-by-step process. It is simple and amazing. You too can learn simple, effortless steps to being yourself.
With a spiritual direction and simple meditation, the grass does look greener on this side.
