A Spiritual Sense of Purpose

By: Mary Ellen Flora

We are often impressed by people who have a clear sense of purpose. They seem much more likely to complete their creations or make a contribution than those who are less certain of their direction.

What is true for individuals also applies to organizations. They, too, can benefit from a clear sense of’ purpose. If we are to work effectively together in the creation of an organization we need to know answers to such questions as “Why does it exist?” and “What is it here to do?”

A statement of purpose also enables an organization to communicate what it is about to others. In turn, they can more easily decide whether or not they want to be involved.

During this, our 10th year in the Northwest, we have been working within the Church of Divine Man to make explicit our purpose. This statement of purpose will, we anticipate, guide the development of the Church over the next ten years.

We have become clear that the primary purpose of the Church is to offer a spiritual path to all those who wish to follow it. This is a path based upon the teachings and techniques taught within CDM and its teaching arm, CDM Spiritual Center. These teachings form the basis of a daily spiritual practice which can last a lifetime.

The development of our Church over the next few years will be focused on providing a structure and support for those following this spiritual way. We will be continuing our other current activities: classes, readings, healings and training to a professional level in the use of spiritual abilities. However, at the core will be the ongoing spiritual journeys of our members.

Individuals with a clear sense of purpose also have a faith or a set of beliefs that sustains them. Organizations have the equivalent and call them “philosophy statements” or “corporate values”. As a Church, we call it a creed.

The creed makes explicit what we believe. For our members it is a validation of shared beliefs. For others it can assist them to know whether or not they share our faith.

The revised Creed of the Church of Divine Man affirms that we are spiritual beings. We acknowledge that each lifetime provides us the opportunity to take another step along our spiritual path.

The following is the text of our Purpose, Creed and Practice statement adopted by the Boards of Directors (Washington, Oregon and B.C.).

Purpose
Our purpose is to teach and to serve spiritual evolvement through our faith and practice.

We are dedicated to providing the opportunity, for anyone who wishes, to follow this spiritual way.

Creed
We believe in Cosmic Consciousness which encompasses all realities, and in the Christ Force which enables us to experience this Consciousness within ourselves. When we are attuned with the Christ Force, we can create in harmony with both spiritual and physical reality.

Spiritual freedom makes all things possible. As we create in this and other realities we evolve through cycles of growth and change. As Spirit, we use the material world as a vehicle to reunite our individual spark with the Cosmic.

Jesus asked, “For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?” We believe that nothing in this world is worth exchanging for a one to one contact between the Cosmic and a living soul.

Practice
Our practice is to consciously manifest ourselves as spirit within body. We do this by turning within each day to communicate with our God and to cleanse and to own our energy system. In this way we maintain our neutrality and amusement.

As we create our reality within our personal space and use our spiritual abilities, we teach and heal ourselves and others.

(Creed Bible quotation: King James – Luke 9:25)
